Girls charged over Southland school attack

Two girls aged 14 and 15 have been charged with assault following an incident at an Eastern Southland school, it has been revealed.

A 15-year-old pupil was attacked while she was having her lunch last Wednesday, Sergeant Sharee Winsloe, of Gore, said.

The victim was punched and kicked 25 to 35 times about the head and body and required medical treatment for a suspected injury to her wrist, Sgt Winsloe said.

The alleged offenders were both from Mataura, Sgt Winsloe said.

The assault was recorded on a cellphone by pupils at the school, but the footage had been secured to stop it from being put online for others to view, she said.

Pupils at the school were co-operating with police about the attack, which was premeditated, she said.

The two girls had been charged with assault with intent to injure and had been remanded on bail to appear in the Gore Youth Court tomorrow.

The school declined to comment about the incident.
