Homicide investigation in Canterbury

A homicide investigation has been launched following the death of a 29-year-old man in Rakaia on Wednesday.

Police were called to the small rural property on Gardiners Rd at Pendarves, northeast of Ashburton shortly after 9am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested said: "The man had sustained an injury and died at the scene. Police are working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death."

A post mortem will be completed on Thursday.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said she was unaware of the investigation.

Ms Favel said she had yet to be informed of the situation when asked by Star News.

"This is the first I am hearing about it actually," she said.
