Firefighters are battling a massive fire at a tyre shop in central Hamilton, the third fire at the shop in four years.

Massive explosions can be heard from the blaze at AH Franks Tyres on Anglesea St.

Flames can be seen inside the windows of the shop and they have engulfed a garage roller door.

Thick plumes of black smoke are coming from the roof and can be seen all over the city, even as far south as Tamahere.

The premises were the subject of a suspected arson yesterday evening when a pile of tyres were set on fire down the side of the building.

It's the third fire at the shop in four years.

Heat from the fire can be felt from across the road and the street has been closed.
