A second woman says she was the victim of an attempted rape the morning a 34-year-old sex worker was viciously raped and assaulted in Auckland's Symonds St cemetery earlier this month.

The sex worker suffered numerous physical injuries during the attack which took place during the early hours of the morning on Saturday, March 15.

She had met her assailant in the vicinity of Liverpool St and Karangahape Rd prior to the assault.

Police have today released an image of a man captured on CCTV in the area at the time they wish to identify and locate.

Auckland City police CIB Detective Sergeant Geoff Baber said they believed the man may have valuable information which could assist the investigation.

No weapons were used in the attack but the victim suffered serious injuries to her head, torso and legs, and as a result and was hospitalised for two days, he said.

Investigators also wanted to speak to a woman who called police about 1.50am on the morning of the attack complaining of an attempted rape by a violent man in a car in Hereford St or Hopetoun St.

Her claim was investigated, however the name and address she provided to police was incorrect, Mr Baber said.

"'We'd like that woman to contact us so that we can determine whether or not her complaint is related to the vicious attack on the 34 year-old woman a few hours later."

Following the attack the victim sought refuge in the Langham Hotel, where staff assisted her and contacted police.

In 1996, sex worker Natacha Hogan, known as Twiggy, was raped and murdered in the Symonds St Cemetery by New Zealand's first serial killer, Hayden Poulter.

Anyone with information about the attack is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Baber on 021 191 6089, email geoffrey.baber@police.govt.nz or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
