The man injured in an incident at the Crown Hotel in Temuka on Saturday night has died.
Dale Robert Bellaney, 39, of Temuka died at Christchurch Hospital shortly after 8am today, police said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill said at this stage the death is being treated as suspicious.
"The focus of our inquiries is on establishing how Mr Bellaney incurred his injuries," she said.
"It is too early to speculate on the details of what has happened in this incident."
A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out tomorrow.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage and are interviewing witnesses to the incident which took place outside the Crown Hotel around 8.45pm on Saturday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Neill said it was believed a number of vehicles were driven past the hotel around the time of the incident, and police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area.
