The inquisitorial model is already used in South Africa, where it has resulted in higher conviction rates for sexual assault, and is used to try child sexual offending cases in Victoria.
In New Zealand, similar systems are already used to try domestic violence cases.
Justice Minister Simon Power has asked the Law Commission to look at the idea.
He was comfortable with the adversarial system but different techniques could be useful in sexual offending and child abuse situations.
"There might be some elements of the inquisitorial process that might be less traumatic for victims of crime if they are applied in a limited context," Mr Power said.
