Interislander ferry resume sailings

An Interislander ferry that broke down in Wellington Harbour yesterday will resume sailings today, but only for freight and not passengers.

The Arahura was left stranded with 61 passengers on board when it was coming into berth in Wellington just before 10am.

The fault was traced back to a failed electronic card which controlled the pitch of the vessel's propellers, Interislander said in a statement today.

The card had since been replaced and testing had been completed.

The ferry would resume its sailing from Wellington at 6.30pm with freight only on board, and return from Picton at 10.30pm, also with freight, Interislander spokesman Michael Flyger said.

Passengers on today's sailings were rebooked onto the Kaitaki at 8pm.

Arahura was cleared to sail by both Maritime New Zealand and her classification society Det Norske Veritas after repairs were carried out on board and sea trials completed last night.

Both crossings would transit the northern entrance of the Marlborough Sounds to allow all on-board systems to bed in.

Arahura's first passenger crossings would depart from Wellington at 2.30am and Picton at 6.30am.
