Former Prime Minister Helen Clark will be honoured with a prestigious award by the Japanese Government for her work promoting NZ-Japanese links.

The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun is the highest category of decoration in the order, established in 1875 and the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese Government.

In receiving the honour, Clark joins a club that includes former Australian Prime Ministers John Howard and Malcolm Fraser.

Clark had also strengthened the relationship between Japan and the United Nations Development Programme, the Japanese Embassy said in a press release.
