Two men who admitted assaulting cricket star Jesse Ryder outside a Christchurch bar two years ago can be named for the first time today.

Craig O'Neill, 39, and his nephew Dylan O'Neill, 22, had their interim name suppression order lapse this morning.

Craig, a Canterbury builder, was initially charged with assault and injuring with reckless disregard for the safety of Ryder who was in an induced coma for nearly three days after the assault.

He was due to stand trial next month but has since pleaded guilty at Christchurch District Court to an amended charge of assault with intent to injure.

Dylan O'Neill, a carpet layer, earlier admitted a charge of assault following the altercation with the controversial cricketer outside a Merivale bar on the night of March 28, 2013.

Neither man appeared at Christchurch District Court this morning when Judge Stephen O'Driscoll announced that the interim name suppression order had now lapsed.

They have both been remanded on bail and will be sentenced on May 6.
