A jet skier who rescued two teens swept out to sea at a Bay of Plenty beach has been praised by police.
The 15-year-old boys were swimming at a spot off Anzac Cove, near Bowentown, when they got into difficulty shortly after 5.30pm yesterday.
"It looks like they were swept out in the current after swimming off the deeper end of the beach and they just managed to raise the attention of a jet-skier in the area who dragged them back to shore," Eastern Waikato Senior Sergeant Rod Carpinter said.
The boys were taken to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.
Police would be looking at the best way to acknowledge the jet-skier's actions, he said.
He also urged holiday makers to follow basic safety steps while at the beach.
"Always swim between the flags and where possible, swim with a friend.
"While swimming with your friend or friends know and keep to the limits of your capabilities. If you don't know the area, swim closer to shore, unknown currents and rips can soon become dangerous."
People should also seek out lifeguards where possible, and ask for advice on local swimming conditions before entering the water, Mr Carpinter said.
