John Key eats live cricket with Bear Grylls

John Key says live maggots were the worst things he had to eat, when he was called up on stage at a Bear Grylls' show in Auckland tonight.

The prime minister joined the Man vs Wild host and comedian Rhys Darby onstage at Vector Arena, where Grylls was delivering a two-hour stage show about his adventures around the world.

Mr Key told TVNZ's Breakfast today he was in the audience only very briefly. "He [Grylls] must have known I was there but I was very much incognito."

"You've got to crunch it," Grylls said before all three ate a live cricket, to cheers and applause from the crowd.

Mr Key said "the worst thing he gave me was a huhu grub with a pinch full of live maggots which were wriggling down the back of my throat."

He said the stunt might help him in the polls, which have shown his National Party in decline.

"I reckon I might regain one of those points from Bear Grylls lovers."

Grylls was in New Zealand for two stage shows in which he recalls his experiences of survival in some of the world's toughest environments.

Last night's show - which featured on-stage action, fire and of course, bug-eating - was the second of Grylls' two appearances. The first was in Wellington
