Kiwi attacked in Poland, dumped across border

A New Zealander visiting Poland has been reportedly beaten and robbed in a daylight attack that ended when he was dumped across the country's border into Slovakia.

The incident happened on Sunday, about 1.30pm local time, in the centre of Zakopane, in the south of Poland, radio station RMF FM reported.

The man, identified only as 62-year-old Gordon, a director of a school in Burma, was on his way to rental accommodation at the time.

He was waiting for a bus when a car pulled up next to him and offered him a ride, RMF FM reported.

Gordon got into the car because he thought it was a private taxi.

One man then grabbed him, while another beat him until he lost consciousness, he told the radio station.

"I woke up ... somewhere in Slovakia, when [they] pushed me out of the car."

Gordon was left with a bruised face and his wallet and other items stolen. He was hospitalised and interviewed by police before returning to Poland.

The tourist had planned to stay until mid-July, but was now making plans to leave the country, the station said.

Gordon was not able to describe the vehicle or the offenders.

"I don't even know if they were Poles or Slovaks," he said.

"I don't know why it was so brutal."

He believed his attackers were annoyed he was not carrying more cash.

The case was being handled by Polish and Slovak police.
