A petrol station attendant was sliced by a man wielding a machete during an aggravated robbery in Napier.

Police are investigating the robbery at Mobil petrol station on Taradale Rd.

A man armed with a machete entered the station about 9.30 last night, demanding the lone attendant hand over cigarettes and tobacco.

The attendant was struck several times with the machete, and suffered a laceration on his arm.

The offender fled when a member of the public entered the station.

Police believe the offender was loitering around the petrol station before entering.
