Man accused of assaulting baby

A Canterbury man has been charged with assaulting a three-month old baby.

The 35-year-old man was granted interim name suppression when he appeared at Christchurch District Court this morning.

Police allege that between November 7 and 8 last year the man assaulted the 14-week-old child, causing grievous bodily harm.

He also faces charges of assaulting a woman and breaching a protection order.

Judge Tony Couch granted interim name suppression but noted that it would need to be argued fully at the man's next appearance on September 14.

He was remanded on bail without plea.
