Man dies at Rotorua resort

A man has died of a suspected drowning in a pool at a five star resort in Rotorua.

A police media spokeswoman said emergency services were called just after 9.30am to the Regal Palms Resort on Fenton St where CPR was performed on the man.

However the man, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have reported the death to the coroner.

A woman at reception said they did not know what had happened and were "completely traumatised" by the incident.

Rotorua District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Mike Membrey said the man was worked on for more than an hour.

He said police were still talking to witnesses and contacting the man's family.

"Police also conducted a scene examination which is standard in these kinds of situations."

He said there were no issues found with the safety of the pool.

"The man was a guest staying at the resort and had every right to be in the pool."
