Man dies in Upper Hutt fire

Police and fire safety investigators are investigating a fatal house fire in the Upper Hutt suburb of Trentham, early today.

Emergency services were called to the Miro Street address about 12.50am and found a house and an outhouse fully ablaze.

Inspector Paul Jermy of central police communications said the body of a man was found in a sleepout at the rear of the address. His identity was yet to be confirmed.

Central fire communications shift manager Mike Wanoa told NZPA a child was treated for burns and an adult suffered smoke inhalation.

Six appliances took just under an hour to get the fire under control and fire officers were still at the scene dampening down hotspots.

Mr Wanoa said the man's body was found about 1.50am.

It is not yet known how the fire started, but a full scene examination will be conducted later today.
