Man due in court after body found

A 33-year-old man will appear in court today over the death of an as-yet-unidentified man whose body was found at a South Auckland car park early yesterday.

Police said that the accused man faces a charge of common assault but further more serious charges could follow.

He was arrested several hours after the body of the dead man was found in a car park at the Otara Shopping Centre.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pete Jones said police were still trying to identify the victim whom he described as a solidly built Polynesian man in his late 30s or early 40s.

He said several people witnessed the assault and he appealed to them to come forward.

Mr Jones said the accused man would appear in Manukau District Court this morning.

Police were not looking for anyone else at this stage.
