A young man found lying in a Christchurch gutter in a pool of blood is fighting for his life in hospital.
Police say it appears the man - believed to be aged in his 20s - was stabbed in the chest this morning.
They were alerted to his plight by a member of the public around 6.15am. He was found in Gloucestor St in the central city.
"He was lying in the gutter in a pool of blood with what appeared to be a stab wound to the chest," said Acting Senior Sergeant Jim Currie.
A knife was found nearby.
The police are investigating.
A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman said the man was in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital.
