A Taranaki man has died from his injuries, two weeks after a car hit him while he argued with a companion.
Jesse Young, 20, and 29-year-old man argued as they drove along State Highway 3 on the evening of July 15, police said. They stopped south of Stratford and got out of the car.
There were "suggestions" the argument spilled onto the road, police said.
It was dark and a passing motorist did not spot the pair until too late, swerving but still hitting Mr Young.
He was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with critical head injuries, other internal injuries and fractures. He was later transferred to Wellington Hospital where he died yesterday.
Police said no charges would be laid against the driver that struck him.
