Man jailed for child sex offences

A 64-year-old Masterton man was sentenced to five years in jail today for historic child sex charges.

James Uren appeared in Masterton District Court facing seven charges relating to indecent assaults on three children, two girls and one boy.

The offences occurred in Napier between the mid-1970s and the end of the 1980s, over a 13-year-period.

Name suppression was lifted today by presiding Judge Stephen Harrop as the victims requested his name be made public.

Uren pleaded guilty to the indecent assault of a boy aged between 12 and 16, one of indecent assault of a girl aged between nine and 12, two of sexual violation of a girl between nine and 16, one of indecent assault of a girl under 12, and two of indecent assault of a girl between 12 and 16.

Judge Harrop said while the defendant had expressed remorse for his actions, that the abuse continued over a 13-year period demonstrated that his main priority at the time was "self-gratification".
