One of the two people who died in a horrific crash on the Coastal Highway, also known as State Highway 60, in Redwood Valley near Nelson has been named.
Nelson man Stephen Anthony Jayes (41), from Nelson, died when a car towing a caravan crashed with a truck carrying scaffolding. A third vehicle was also thought to be involved.
Five others were injured in the crash which happened about 25km west of Nelson at 10.48am yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Blair Hall said police were wanting to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash and had not already spoken to them.
Police was also seeking any footage of the accident before emergency services arrived on the scene.
"This crash has affected many families and our thoughts go out to these people. This was a very challenging scene and required a large, co-ordinated approach from emergency services and support agencies," Hall said.
The name of the second person will not be released until police have been in contact with the next of kin.
