Man killed in Taranaki crash named

A man who died after a car collided with an Intercity bus in Taranaki yesterday has been named by police.

Te Kuiti man George Crombie, 60, was the driver and sole occupant of the car when it crashed on State Highway 3 at Awakino about 12.30pm yesterday. He died at the scene.

Police said a scene examination had been completed and the crash investigation was ongoing.

The Intercity bus with 21 people on it was travelling southbound, and the car was travelling northbound, when the crash occurred near the southern end of the Awakino Gorge, north of New Plymouth, police said yesterday.

Preliminary indications suggested the car crossed the centre line and collided with the bus, police said.

Mr Crombie's death has been referred to the coroner.
