Man killed in Bay of Plenty crash

A man has died at the scene of a major crash north of Te Puke.

Emergency services were called to the head-on collision, near Black Stump Berries, at 2.28pm today.

The 20-year-old had been trapped in the car he had been travelling in and firefighters were working to free him from the wreck when he died.

Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said a third vehicle was also involved, having clipped one of the others.

Te Puke station officer Keith Merritt said a woman had been taken to Tauranga Hospital. She was understood to be in a serious to stable condition.

Te Puke Highway, a busy arterial route between the township and Tauranga, has been shut down to all traffic at multiple cordons.

Mr Merritt said it was not known how long the highway would be closed for as the Serious Crash Unit had been called.

Diversions were in place at the intersections of the Te Puke Highway and Domain Rd, and Te Puke Highway and Welcome Bay Rd.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible.
