Man with machete arrested near school

Police have arrested a man who was allegedly carrying a machete near Westbrook Primary School.

Senior Sergeant Mike Membery of the Bay of Plenty Police District Command Centre said the man, 24, with the machete had allegedly hit a car near Westbrook Primary School.

"The school put themselves into lock down after we let them know we would be attending the nearby incident. That was great initiative from the school."

My Membery said the school was notified after the arrest had been made and they were now out of lock down.

He said the man would appear in Rotorua District Court tomorrow on charges of possession of an offensive weapon and wilful damage.
