Man rescued after fall on to rocks

A man who injured his leg when he fell on to rocks on the rugged Tasman coast was winched to safety by a rescue helicopter.

The 32-year-old man had been walking on the rocky shoreline near Split Apple Rock in Kaiteriteri, about 15km north of Motueka, when he fell and injured his left ankle and lower leg this morning.

The Nelson/Marlborough rescue helicopter had to be called in because rescuers could not get to him by boat and the rugged terrain made it too difficult to remove him by foot.

The crew winched an intensive care paramedic on to the rocks to stabilise the patient before both were winched into the helicopter.

The man was treated on board as he was flown to Nelson Hospital.
