A man was seriously injured when he was impaled on a metal stake in Gisborne this morning.
Emergency services were called to a residential property in Kaiti about 8.45am after the man in his 80s was impaled on the 1.8m stake, which protruded 1.2m from the ground.
Station officer Ed Hindmarsh said the stake went about 15cm into the man's mid-section, but did not come out the other side.
It was not known how the man came to be impaled.
Firefighters cut the metal stake with a saw so the man could be taken to hospital by ambulance.
An ambulance spokeswoman said the man was taken to Gisborne Hospital's emergency department with serious injuries.
