Man seriously injured after 30m fall

A man has a serious leg injury after falling about 30 metres off a tower and onto a roof in an industrial area in Hastings this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a grain store about 1.45pm after workers found the man on the roof, itself about 8 metres off the ground, St John district operations manager Stephen Smith told APNZ.

It was believed he had been on the roof for about an hour before he was found.

"He's climbed a tower and he's fallen approximately 30 metres onto the roof of another building, he's struck a guide wire on the way down, and hit the apex of the roof," Mr Smith said.

The man, believed to be in his late 40s to early 50s, did not work at the grain store.

It was not known why he was climbing the tower, but police were investigating, he said.

It took about an hour to get the man off the roof after which he was treated further and taken to Hawkes Bay Regional Hospital in a serious condition with a serious leg injury.
