Man shot in Auckland altercation

A man has been shot in a late-night altercation in the Auckland suburb of Three Kings.

The 51-year-old man was shot in the leg at a property in Hayr Rd about 10pm, shortly before a BMW was stolen from outside the address, police said.

It was possible to the two men responsible for the shooting were in the stolen car.

The victim was having surgery today for serious leg injuries.

"A scene examination is underway at the Hayr Rd address and staff are also carrying out area inquiries. We have spoken with one other person who was with the victim at the time of the shooting and he's given us his version of events," acting Detective Senior Sergeant Marcia Murray said.

"Anyone who knows who was responsible for last night's shooting or who has information relating to it or the vehicle, should contact police and is strongly advised not to approach the offenders directly as they are clearly armed and dangerous."

A nearby resident told the Herald he was in bed when a young woman started screaming.

"She was screaming please help me, please, please help me," he said.

He called police as the woman banged on the door, still crying out for help.
