Man shot dead in Hamilton named

The victim of a homicide who was shot at close range in Hamilton yesterday has been named.

He was Michael James Thompson, 29, of Hamilton. He is due to undergo a post-mortem examination today.

Police were called out to an incident in of Melville, Hamilton, at about 6.20pm after hearing reports were received of an altercation between several males.

Mr Thompson was shot at close range.

"The deceased male was fatally injured and died a short time later at Waikato Hospital," police said in a statement.

A St John spokeswoman said Mr Thompson was taken to Waikato Hospital just after 7pm in a critical condition, and police confirmed he died a short time later.

Hamilton police returned to the scene of the murder today supported by ESR Forensic experts.

The team were expected to be at the scene all day looking for evidence to assist in reconstructing the events that led to Mr Thompson's death.

The homicide inquiry was in its very early stages and it was too soon to speculate on various aspects of the event, police said.

Investigators were speaking with witnesses and the community, and are seeking more information to help piece together the events and background of what took place.

Police were speaking to several people as part of the investigation.

They advised Melville residents "to be diligent in securing their properties and vehicles and to immediately report any suspicious behaviour" by calling 111.

Victim support and Iwi Liaison personnel were helping members of Mr Thompson's family.
