Man stabbed by stingray

A Maketu fisherman has been taken to Tauranga Hospital after a stingray barb punctured his leg while at sea this afternoon.

Emergency services were called at 3.10pm to meet the 40-year-old, who was travelling in a boat back to Maketu over the bar.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said the Maketu volunteer fire brigade met the man at the main jetty and assisted him until an ambulance from Papamoa arrived.

The man's thigh had been punctured by the barb.

He was taken by ambulance to Tauranga Hospital.
