A man who fell about five storeys down a lift shaft at an Auckland supermarket construction site is in a serious but stable condition this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the Countdown Cider Building development, on the corner of Pollen St and Williamson Ave in Ponsonby, about 10am yesterday after a construction worker fell more than 15 metres down a lift shaft.

Today, an Auckland District Health Board spokesman said the man was in a "serious but stable" condition.

Yesterday, Ron Macdonald, general manager, northern region, for Ebert Construction said the incident was under investigation and the company was cooperating with WorkSafe New Zealand.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured man and his family at this time."
