A man has been told not to go within 100 metres of any Work and Income office in New Zealand after allegedly making threats against a staff member yesterday.
Hunter Mangu Warren Montgomery, 47, was arrested after an alleged incident at the New Brighton Work and Income office in Beresford Street, Christchurch, yesterday.
He was later allegedly found in possession of a knife.
Montgomery, an invalid beneficiary of South New Brighton, appeared from custody at Christchurch District Court this morning charged with threatening behaviour and possession of an offensive weapon, namely a knife, in Aranui.
Police prosecutor Glenn Henderson did not oppose bail, but asked for a condition that he does not go within 100 metres of any Work and Income office in New Zealand.
Mr Henderson said it was necessary to bring home the seriousness of the comment he's alleged to have made, "given the circumstances".
Judge Brian Callaghan granted Montgomery bail to reappear on September 19.
Police said in a statement this morning: "Police would like to reassure the public that we are taking all such threats seriously and would like to remind people that these threats will be dealt with firmly and appropriately."
