A man in a wheelchair was killed when he was struck by a freight train on the Kapiti Coast this morning.
Police said the man was struck by a northbound train at the Paraparaumu railway station just before 11.30am.
"He was in a wheelchair and early indications are he's fallen off the platform. A freight train was coming through at the time," Inspector Mike Coleman said.
Police were investigating on behalf of the coroner and trying to contact the man's family.
A KiwiRail spokeswoman said buses were replacing passenger rail services on the Paraparaumu section of the line for now, while police remained at the scene.
"KiwiRail's thoughts are with everybody involved," she said.
