Marlborough forest blaze contained

A huge forest fire burning since Thursday in Marlborough is under control, and resources are being scaled back, authorities say.

Today's aerial efforts to control the blaze focused on two hotspots on the perimeter of the burned area.

The total area burned was about 1200ha.

Helicopters would not be needed after today, but firefighters would stay at the scene for the next few days.

A flyover of the site planned for Wednesday would help authorities decide when scene management could be handed back to the owners.

"Waihopai Valley residents can rest easy knowing that the evacuation preparation is not going to be required," Marlborough principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara said today.

"We want to thank the community for their cooperation and also for the generous support our teams received in terms of food and drink.

"All those donations were gratefully received and the fire crews get a kick out of knowing they are appreciated."

No further donations were required, he said.
