The 43-year-old Gisborne man had been missing since around noon on Thursday and a search team found his body around 10:30am today, Sergeant Greg Lexmond said.

His car had been found with his surfboard and wetsuit inside near a popular surf break yesterday.

"He was a very popular guy," he said.

His death was not being treated as suspicious, Mr Lexmond said.
