Missing tramper found

A Nelson tramper reported overdue by several days from a two-week trip in the headwaters of the Whataroa River was found alive and well this morning by police search and rescue.

Bret Islav Karel Herman, 67, was reported missing yesterday after his car was found parked in the Whataroa River valley with a note stating his intentions.

He was found on the tops in the area about mid-morning today.

Constable Bill Parker, of Franz Josef Glacier police, said a two-man rescue team helped by a local helicopter flew into the area earlier this morning. Mr Herman was flown back to his car and by late this morning was making his way to Franz Josef Glacier.
