Mob member dies after Canterbury crash

A man who died following a crash in Canterbury last night is understood to have been a Mongrel Mob member.

Emergency services responded to the crash, between a car and a truck, on Wairiri Rd, Glentunnel,, in Selwyn about 10.50pm. 

The man was critically injured and a rescue helicopter was called in, but the 29-year-old died before he could be transported to hospital.

"When police arrived one person was located critically injured, while another had received moderate injuries," said a police spokesperson.

"A rescue helicopter was dispatched, but the critically injured man died before being transported to hospital."

Stuff reports the dead man  - the driver of the car  - was a Mongrel Mob member from Ashburton.

The road was closed for a time for a scene examination. It has now reopened.
