More aftershocks in wake of big quake

One of the strongest aftershocks since last week's big quake has rocked the North Island's East Coast early today.

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck at 3.19am in a night of intense quake activity.

It was centred 95km northeast of Te Araroa and 21km deep.

The tremor has been felt widely across the North Island and people from Wellington to Auckland reported the shaking.

A second strong and shallow 5.3 magnitude quake struck a little under two hours later.

Geonet said its epicentre was at the same location as the earlier severe tremor.

The region continues to be rocked by hundreds of quakes, most unnoticeable, after Friday's large 7.1 magnitude quake 125km from Te Araroa.
