A person is missing after failing to return from a climbing trip on Mt Taranaki.

A police spokesman said they were alerted about 3.50pm today that the person had not returned from their climb.

They were expected back on Tuesday evening.

"Police are in the area and are making inquiries," he said.

A car had reportedly been found at the North Egmont carpark, where the main climbing route to the summit begins.

Fairfax reported the person had summitted the mountain but failed to return.

The search was focusing on tracks near the top of the mountain, which is 2518 metres above sea level.

The Taranaki Rescue Helicopter was involved in the search.

The trek from the carpark to the summit was considered a reasonable climb for experienced hikers, although conditions could be difficult in winter.
