The names of the 29 men trapped underground after the Pike Rive mine explosion have yet to be officially released but a list has been compiled of those known to be missing.

Kane Nieper, Married to daughter of a local contractor, they have a young family.

Peter O'Neill, Mr O'Neill's brother is in the mines rescue team. Peter O'Neill was a member the mines rescue team involved in the rescue of miners trapped in floods at Black Reef mine two years ago.

Joseph Dunbar, 17-year-old. Assistant miner from Coal Creek. It was his first day on the job on Friday.

Milton Osborne, A Grey District councillor and contractor at the Pike River mine.

Blair Sims, 28. Sims is a rugby league representative, a regular player in the centre or on the wing for the West Coast. Sims received the West Coast Player of the Year Award the last two years running, as well as being picked for the South Island team this year. He's married with two young children. The family live in Karoro. He grew up in Greymouth and his immediate family live in the area.

Michael Monk, 23. Son of Paroa hotelier Bernie Monk. Rugby rep for the West Coast. He attended St Bede's College in Christchurch as a boarder before he returned home to work in the mine. The extended family all live on the Coast and Michael has a long-term girlfriend.

Benjamin Rockhouse. The younger brother of coal miner Daniel Rockhouse, 24, who was one of only two men to escape the mine explosion. Neville Rockhouse, Ben and Daniel's father, is the safety & training manager at Pike River Coal. The younger boys' grandfather died on Saturday.

Josh Ufer, 25. From Australia. Is a drilling supervisor from Middlemount in Queensland. Ufer's fiancee, Rachelle Weaver, is three months pregnant and family have flown to Greymouth in the hope that Ufer will emerge alive.

Pete Rodger, 40. From Scotland. This is not the first time Rodger has been trapped in the mine. He started at Pike River in April and was trapped underground for eight hours about three months ago. He is from Perth in Scotland and lives in New Zealand with his girlfriend,.

Brendon Palmer. Stuff reported Palmer was walking into the 2.5km-deep tunnel when he passed his father Marty Palmer, who had just finished a shift at 8am on Friday morning. Marty mentioned he had reported gas problems when he finished his shift.

Malcolm Campbell, 25, of Scotland. Campbell is due to marry his Kiwi fiancee Amanda, who manages a Greymouth hotel, on December 18. Originally from St Andrews in Fife, Scotland

Koos Jonker, South African media reported Jonker as among the missing. His wife has a message on her Facebook page thanking people for their prayers.

Alan Dixon, 60, Comes from Runanga.

Zen Drew, 21, Zen's father Laurie is one of the only family members to speak publicly so far. Laurie last night told media "If I had my way, I'd be down there and I'd go into the mine myself - I'm not scared or nothing - and I'd go and look myself, gas or not."

Terry Kitchin, From Runanga. Had finished shift before his shift before the explosion, but opted to do two hours overtime.
