NZ journalist dies in Sydney

John Spiers, a New Zealander who spent many years as a senior journalist in Australia, has died after a long battle with cancer.

A former editor of Daily Commercial News (DCN), Spiers was well-known in the industry as an aviation and shipping writer for The Australian in the 1970s and 80s before joining the DCN, where he was editor until 1996, Lloyd's List reported.

A keen sailor and pilot, he later edited a magazine for Australian aircraft owners and pilots and was a driving force in establishing the Australian Flying publication.

His funeral will be held on December 21 in Sydney.
