NZ Red Cross joins Aust bushfire appeal

New Zealand Red Cross has joined its Australian counterpart to raise money for those affected by fires in Victoria, which have so far claimed more than 100 lives.

Money will go to the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Fund, established by Victorian Premier John Brumby, along with Australia Red Cross and the Federal Government to assist affected communities and individuals.

The fires have quickly become the worst in the country's history, having broken out in extreme heat and dry winds, wiping out entire towns.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today accepted an offer by his New Zealand counterpart John Key to send 100 firefighters over to help battle the blaze.

New Zealand Red Cross said those wanting to support the bushfire fund could do so by visiting www.redcross.org.nz, or calling 0900 33 200 for an automatic $20 donation.

Cheques can be posted to; Australian Bushfire Appeal, Red Cross House, PO Box 12140, Thorndon, Wellington 6144, or donations can be made directly at New Zealand Red Cross service centres.
