One person is dead after a bus careered off the road into the Waiau River in North Canterbury, 30km east of Hanmer Springs.
A man, the sole occupant, has died, police confirmed in a statement.
Police said they were called to the scene at 7.45pm.
Rotherham Rd has been closed with diversion in place on Leslie Hills Rd.
The Serious Crash Unit are on the scene and will be investigating the cause of the crash.
