One dead, one critical after shootings

A man is in a critical but stable condition after being shot in Matamata last night.

Another man was found dead near the scene of the shooting on Mowbray Rd, Waharoa, where police were called shortly after 11pm.

Detective Inspector Karl Thornton said a woman called 111 to report that her 20-year-old boyfriend had been shot by an offender who fled the property in a ute.

The scene was secured while ambulance staff treated the victim, who was airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he was this morning in a critical but stable condition.

Mr Thornton said police, including the armed offenders squad, then carried out searches around Waharoa and Matamata.

"At about 3.20am officers located a deceased male at a Tower Rd, Matamata, address.

"The 21-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound and police do not believe his death is suspicious."

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to either of the shootings and scene guards are in place at both addresses with forensic examinations to commence this morning.
