One person has died in a head-on crash on the Rimutaka Hill road between the Wellington and Wairarapa regions this morning.
Two cars collided at Pakuratahi, on the Upper Hutt side of the Rimutaka Hill, about 7.15am.
Inspector David Rose of police central communications said one person died at the scene.
The occupant of the other vehicle was taken to Wellington Hospital with moderate injuries.
Mr Rose said State Highway 2 was closed between Upper Hutt and Featherston while police examined and cleared the scene.
"An alternative route, unfortunately for motorists, is up through the Manawatu Gorge, so we'll endeavour to clear that soon, as quickly as we can, to reopen the road."
Delays were also expected on the Desert Road in the central North Island this morning while contractors cleared the scene of an overnight truck crash.
A truck and trailer unit had rolled down a bank at the Three Sisters, about midway between Taihape and Taupo, about 3.45am.
Mr Rose said nobody was injured in the crash.
