One seriously injured in crash

One person has been seriously injured in a crash which involved two trucks and a car just south of Palmerston North this afternoon.

Central police communications Inspector John Spence said emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on State Highway 57, near Shannon, about 4.45pm.

He said two trucks and a car were involved in the accident. Police believed the crash was caused when one of the vehicles crossed the centre line.

Mr Spence said one person was flown by rescue helicopter to Palmerston North Hospital with very serious injuries.

Several other people were also injured in the crash, he said.

State Highway 57 between Levin and Shannon was expected to be closed for two hours.

"People travelling around there can expect delays and there are diversions in place."
