The 36-year-old passenger in a vehicle has died after it crossed the centreline and crashed into a concrete power pole in eastern Bay of Plenty.
The accident happened as the south-bound vehicle negotiated a moderate left-hand bend on Reid Road, Taneatua early last night, police said.
Emergency services were called about 6.30pm.
There were two occupants in this vehicle, and the 33-year-old driver was taken to Whakatane hospital with moderate injuries.
Police said both alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the collision, and the serious crash unit is investigating the incident.
Reid Road was closed between both ends of Awahou Road for about four hours.
The name of the deceased will be released once next of kin have been advised.
In a separate incident, power lines were brought down early this morning by a car crash on the intersection of Bushmere Road and Bell Road in Makaraka in the Gisborne District.
As a result Bushmere Road between Main Road (SH2) and Farmer Road, as well as Bell Road between Saleyard Road and Bushmere will be closed this morning until the local power company can fix the damage, police said.
The crash occurred about 12:30am involving one vehicle. No one was seriously hurt.
