A person is dead after a motor vehicle rolled down a bank and landed on them at a rural property in Taranaki last night.
Police were called to the incident at a private property on Makakaho Road in South Taranaki at 10.22pm, central police communications Inspector Ken Climo told NZPA.
Mr Climo said a group of people had been at the scene of the accident.
"The vehicle's rolled down a bank and come to rest on top of one of the party."
The person died at the scene, but no one else had been injured, Mr Climo said.
"It's one of those tragic accidents. People going about a normal sort of activity and it's gone wrong."
Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in the accident.
Police were still attempting to contact the deceased person's next of kin, Mr Climo said.
No further details were available.
