Police will this morning ask the families of the 29 miners trapped at the Pike River Coal mine whether they can publicly release their names.

The 29 comprise 24 New Zealanders, two Australians, two Scots and a South African.

Many have already been named publicly.

There has been some anguish from the families over the release of the names, but Tasman area police commander Superintendent Gary Knowles said yesterday he would explain to them this morning why police thought names should be released.

The British Foreign Office has confirmed the two Scots are Peter Roger (40) and Malcolm Campbell (25), both New Zealand residents.

An unofficial list of men known to be missing includes:

Kane Nieper, married to daughter of a local contractor.
They have a young family.

Peter O'Neill. Mr O'Neill's brother is in the mines rescue team.
Peter O'Neill was a member of the mines rescue team involved in the rescue of miners trapped in floods at Black Reef mine two years ago.

Joseph Dunbar (17), assistant miner from Coal Creek.
It was his first day on the job on Friday.

Milton Osborne, a Grey District councillor and contractor at the Pike River mine.

Blair Sims (28), a rugby league representative and a regular player in the centre or on the wing for the West Coast.
Received West Coast Player of the Year Award the past two years running, as well as being picked for the South Island team this year.

Michael Monk (23), son of Paroa hotelier Bernie Monk. Rugby rep for the West Coast.
Attended St Bede's College, Christchurch, as a boarder before returning home to work in the mine.

Benjamin Rockhouse, the younger brother of miner Daniel Rockhouse (24), who was one of only two men to escape the mine explosion.

Neville Rockhouse, Ben and Daniel's father, is safety and training manager at Pike River Coal.
The brothers' grandfather died on Saturday.

Josh Ufer (25), drilling supervisor from Middlemount, in Queensland.
Fiancee Rachelle Weaver is three months' pregnant and family have flown to Greymouth in the hope Mr Ufer will emerge alive.

Pete Rodger (40), started at Pike River in April and was trapped underground for eight hours about three months ago. From Perth, Scotland, and lives in New Zealand with girlfriend.

Malcolm Campbell (25), due to marry Kiwi fiancee Amanda, who manages a Greymouth hotel, on December 18.

Koos Jonker. South African media reported Mr Jonker as among the missing.
His wife has a message on her Facebook page thanking people for their prayers.

Alan Dixon (60), comes from Runanga.

Zen Drew (21). Mr Drew's father, Laurie, is one of the only family members to speak publicly so far. He told media: "If I had my way, I'd be down there and I'd go into the mine myself - I'm not scared or nothing - and I'd go and look myself, gas or not."
