Prime Minister John Key has laid a wreath at the Bataclan theatre in Paris, where almost 100 people were gunned down in the recent terror attacks.

Mr Key and his wife Bronagh joined Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy in making the tribute to the 130 victims of the Paris attacks.

Mr Key flew into the city on Sunday evening from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta.

He will join other world leaders at the COP21 climate talks in Paris.

The Bataclan was the scene of the worst loss of life in the November 13 attacks, when terrorists linked to Isis struck seven sites.

People were watching the American band Eagles of Death Metal at the Bataclan when the attack occurred.
